If you’re interested in full-size luxury and sophistication, but would like to keep your carbon footprint small, you’re in luck: the new 2014 Mercedes-Benz S500 Plug-In Hybrid should debut soon. The cleaner, more efficient version of the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is set to be unveiled in Frankfurt, Germany, at the Frankfurt Motor Show later this year. This will be the most powerful out of three total hybrid versions of the new flagship vehicle that Mercedes-Benz will manufacture and sell worldwide. The 2014 S-Class will be arriving at dealerships this fall, and news of an upcoming hybrid model means that it should appeal to even wider range of drivers.The new plug-in hybrid S-Class is being revealed as the S500, but it very well could be sold as the S550 here in the United States. It will be powered by a turbocharged V6 and an electric motor. A lithium-ion battery pack will be mounted in the trunk and will be rechargeable through a port on the right rear bumper. The new car will reportedly only emit 70 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer, making it the greenest S-class yet. That also beats out the car’s closest competitor — the Porsche Panamera E-Hybrid — and puts it under most tax-incentive thresholds for emissions.
You can expect strong fuel economy, though no numbers have been revealed yet.. The new S-Class Plug-In Hybrid should also be quite competitive when it comes to performance — Mercedes-Benz says it should hit 60 mph from a stop in only about 5 seconds.
The new S500 Plug-In Hybrid will be joined by the diesel-powered S300 BlueTEC® Hybrid and a gas-powered S400 Hybrid, depending on the market.
No pricing or release date has been set for the new S500 Plug-In Hybrid, but we expect that you’ll be able to find this clean luxury car here at Mercedes-Benz of Hoffman Estates by the end of next year.
