The new plug-in hybrid S-Class is being revealed as the S500, but it very well could be sold as the S550 here in the United States. It will be powered by a turbocharged V6 and an electric motor. A lithium-ion battery pack will be mounted in the trunk and will be rechargeable through a port on the right rear bumper. The new car will reportedly only emit 70 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer, making it the greenest S-class yet. That also beats out the car’s closest competitor — the Porsche Panamera E-Hybrid — and puts it under most tax-incentive thresholds for emissions.
You can expect strong fuel economy, though no numbers have been revealed yet.. The new S-Class Plug-In Hybrid should also be quite competitive when it comes to performance — Mercedes-Benz says it should hit 60 mph from a stop in only about 5 seconds.
The new S500 Plug-In Hybrid will be joined by the diesel-powered S300 BlueTEC® Hybrid and a gas-powered S400 Hybrid, depending on the market.
No pricing or release date has been set for the new S500 Plug-In Hybrid, but we expect that you’ll be able to find this clean luxury car here at Mercedes-Benz of Hoffman Estates by the end of next year.
